KCD 045 BLACK ANGEL (PERU) FROM THE DARKNESS CD

Ketzer Records verband ich bisher immer mit extrem hochkarätigen Veröffentlichungen! Wie schaut's mit dem neuesten Output von BLACK ANGEL aus Peru aus? Laut Infoblatt geistern hießige schon seit 1988 durch die lokale und auch internationale Metal-Szene. Verblieben ist nur noch ein Gründungsmitglied, Hector Corpus, welcher im Jahre 2000 die Band wiederbelebt hat. Erwartet habe ich laut Infoblatt krachenden Old-School (Black) Metal der Marke "possessed by evil". Doch was mich erwarten sollte, waren doomige, schleppende Gitarrenläufe, gepaart mit extrem verzerrten Vocals. Ab und an driftet man aber auch mal in Rasereien ab. Als Einflüsse werden etliche Veteranen wie Venom, Samael, Slayer, Darkthrone etc. genannt. Doch kaum eine der Bands finde ich auf "From The Darkness" wieder. Nur die ab und an (relativ unpassend und plötzlich) eingestreuten Soli erinnern hier und da an die alten Heroen. Die relativ simpel gestrickten Songstrukturen erinnern dann auch eher an eine neue gegründete Band, die hier eine ihrer ersten Demos präsentieren will. Denn am instrumentalen Handwerk erkennt man die mittlerweile 17 Jahre, die die Band auf dem Buckel hat, nicht wirklich. Natürlich soll man auch nicht mit unglaublichen Techniken aufwarten, doch auch die unpassend gesetzten Breaks (plötzlich aus dem Nichts) und sehr primitiven Übergängen wissen etwas zu enttäuschen. Das größte Manko stellt für mich allerdings der Sound dar. Die relativ böse Grundatmosphäre wird durch den Sound leider zerstört. Vor allem bei den Blast-Beat Passagen klingt das Plastik-Schlagzeug viel zu dominant und übertönt die Gitarren und den Knurr-Gesang zu sehr. Des weiteren habe ich mit dem Gesang so meine Probleme. Ursprünglichkeit ist überhaupt nicht zu erkennen, und heraus kommt ein seltsam verzerrter Knurr-Keif Gesang, der überhaupt nicht dazu passen will.

Hätte die Scheibe einen ungeschliffeneren (will heißen: passenderen) Sound würde meiner Meinung nach ein knapper Punkt mehr drin sein. Denn diverse Ansätze sind wirklich überzeugend, so z.B. das ganze(!) vorletzte Stück "Slaves Of Evil". Wirklich einem Genre zuordnen kann man BLACK ANGEL nicht, Doom- ist genauso vertreten wie Thrash- und Black Metal.

BLACK ANGEL aus Peru legen mit "From The Darkness" ein dreckiges Black-Metal-Album vor, das nicht nur gut, sondern auch recht eigenständig ist. Große Experimente werden zwar nicht gemacht, denn im Grunde gibt’s schon astreinen Black Metal auf die Ohren, höchstens ein paar Death- und Thrash-Einsprengsel sind zu vermerken. Ungewöhnlich sind allerdings die vielen Passagen in gebremstem Tempo, die mit ihrer gezügelten Energie eine ganz eigene Note einbringen. Überhaupt sind BLACK ANGEL nicht unbedingt angetreten, um Geschwindigkeitsrekorde zu brechen, und die Band kommt teilweise schon fast erdig rockend daher (zum Beispiel bei 'The Sect'). Auch wird man hier mal nicht von einem übermächtigen Lärmwall überrollt, sondern die Peruaner agieren eher minimalistisch, dadurch aber nicht weniger wirkungsvoll. So überzeugt "From The Darkness" auf der einen Seite durch bewährt finstere Stimmung, hebt sich aber in der Umsetzung doch etwas von gewohnten Black-Metal-Klängen ab, so dass man BLACK ANGEL zugleich traditionellen Old School Spirit und eine gewisse Eigenständigkeit zuschreiben kann. Gelungenes Album!

Es ist nicht nur die rotzig-okkulte Frische des südamerikanischen Satanismus, der Bands aus diesem Kontinent für mich oft in Kultnähe rückt. Im Falle von BLACK ANGEL begünstigt dies beispielsweise auch das herrlich stilechte Cover. Man könnte es fast Naivität nennen, wie viele dieser Gruppen Black Metal Klischees bedienen, die für europäische Bands zu plump erscheinen. Von daher rührt aber auch die spürbare Unverbrauchtheit, und wenn die Musik passt fetzt es einfach nur noch. Bei BLACK ANGEL stimmt jedenfalls das musikalische Resultat. Der Peruaner zelebriert ähnlich wie INQUISITION meist im Mid-Tempo angesiedelte Songs mit tieferen Gitarren als aus nordischen Schwarzmetall-Schmieden üblich. Auch stärker präsent ist das Gespür für klassischen Metal. Es wird besonders die Rhythmik betont und alles ist sehr treibend, wodurch aber gelegentliche schnelle Parts umso kraftvoller wirken. Die Stimme ist unfassbar dünn und krächzend, sodass man sich erstmal daran gewöhnen muss. Es verwundert etwas, dass BLACK ANGEL schon seit 1988 existieren und dies nun anno 2005 die Debüt-CD der Ein-Mann-Band ist. Nach einem Werk, dass ausgiebig konzipiert und arrangiert wurde, klingt es jedenfalls nicht, eher simpel, roh und durchtrieben.

When you employ the word “Black” into your band name, you are making a bold statement. You are shouting at the world that the music that you play has a dark side, something that will make at least 95% of the population turn their backs and, in some cases, run. Look to early BLACK SABBATH with their satanic flirtations or the unrelenting contempt of BLACK WITCHERY as cases in point. Do BLACK ANGEL lurk in the same dark cave, hellfire eyes menacing you from the murk? You can bet your left testicle they do.
BLACK ANGEL have been going that long you could expect to see their early works on the Antiques Roadshow. How much do you think they are worth? What would you pay for something classic? They are certainly worth the price of this CD. This is old style Black Metal pared to the bone influenced by the South American hordes of yore and the nascent 80’s BM. “From The Darkness” comes across as an angry swarm of killer bees for the most part, however there is a lumbering leviathan pushing from the depths leeching evil essence making sure it’s presence is known also.
This is Metal in its primal form and as such it evokes ancient malice in a way that more contemporary bands cannot achieve. Whether it is the funereal Black Doom of the title track or the pouring of oil on fire that is “Harlots Of Satan” you get the sense that the Devil’s hand is at play. What you hear is what you get, there is no attempt to thicken the sound with accessories and this minimalist approach is the frame upon which each track is nailed. BLACK ANGEL are DARKTHRONE’S older brother, having spent some time kicking shit with that no good SLAYER kid. Their sound is not often come across nowadays, perhaps isolation has allowed the purity to remain unsullied by trends from across the seas.
This band reminds me of a (Black) Panther. They spend some time stalking their prey, creeping through the undergrowth before bursting forth at full pelt, intent on the kill. Striking with maximum effect, they choke the life out of the unfortunate before gorging on the bloodied feast. Once sated, they slope off looking for their next meal. This Panther needs to eat often because some of the chases they embark upon are anything but brief.
BLACK ANGEL stand no nonsense on this album, they burn lean and the flat distortion of the guitar makes its point in no uncertain terms. The riffs buzzsaw away cutting precisely into your skull. Occasionally a lead break acid etches into a song, threatening to dissolve it in the middle. The longer tracks tend to utilise that slowburner Doom sound to sandwich the breakneck fury the band wields so well, this effectively means you can bang your head to your hearts content until it gets lopped from your neck by the rapid sections. Though they possess a fairly uniform sound, the varied tempos and screeching solos prevent any accusation of tedium. The bass is solid in support though it only really gets a chance to show off on the slower sections tending to be felt rather than heard on the swifty bits. Vocals are croaked in true underworld fashion, demonic throughout. The drums run the whole gamut, from a marching tattoo right through the gears to full on blast. Everything is mixed in the right proportion for the style and the production ensures that we are talking matt black here, none of that black chrome business.
If you are not convinced yet, visit the label site and have a listen to the fleet-footer that is “Apocalyptic War II.” After 17 years in existence, BLACK ANGEL have finally managed to inflict their first album proper on humanity. Wer in seinem Bandnamen das Wort “Black” verwendet, setzt damit schon mal ein großes Ausrufezeichen. Man lässt erkennen, dass die eigene Musik etwas Dunkles hat, etwas, das 95% aller Menschen erschaudern und manchmal sogar davonrennen lässt. Man beachte nur mal die frühen BLACK SABBATH mit ihren satanischen Flirts oder die gnadenlosen BLACK WITCHERY z.B. Wie sieht es also nun bei BLACK ANGEL aus, entführen sie uns ebenso in die Dunkelheit? Ihr könnt euer linkes Ei drauf verwetten, dass sie es tun. 

BLACK ANGEL gibt es bereits schon so lange, dass man ihre früheren Werke mittlerweile im Antiquitätenhandel vorfinden kann. Was glaubt ihr, wie viel sie wert sind? Was würdet ihr denn für ihre Klassiker bezahlen? Ihre neue CD ist ihren Preis jedenfalls absolut wert. Hier handelt es sich um Black Metal der alten Schule, beeinflusst von den alten südamerikanischen Horden und dem 80er BM. „From The Darkness“ wirkt meistens wie ein bösartiger Schwarm von Killerbienen, jedoch haben sie auch ein schlummerndes, träges Ungeheuer am Start, dass nur darauf wartet, sich aus der Tiefe zu erheben. 

Dies ist Metal in seiner ursprünglichsten Form und hat eine so bösartige Aura, wie man sie von aktuellen Bands kaum mehr kennt. Sei es beim traurigen Black Doom des Titeltracks oder dem superheißen „Harlots Of Satan“, es wird stets deutlich, dass hier der Teufel seine Hände mit im Spiel hat. Und so hat es die Band nicht nötig ihren Sound irgendwie aufzumotzen und genau dieser minimalistische Anspruch ist es, der bei jedem Track das Fundament darstellt. BLACK ANGEL sind die älteren Brüder von DARKTHRONE und viel schlimmer als SLAYER. Ein solcher Sound ist heutzutage echt selten geworden, da sind sämtliche Trends dran vorbeigeschwommen. 

Die Band erinnert mich an einen schwarzen Panter. Sie pirschen sich langsam an ihre Opfer heran, lauern im Gestrüpp um dann unbarmherzig anzugreifen und zu töten. Dies tun sie mit maximaler Wirkungskraft, sie pressen das Leben aus dem unschuldigen Opfer förmlich heraus um aus ihm ihr blutiges Festmahl zu bereiten. Und einmal gesättigt, machen sie sich auch schon auf die Suche nach einem neuen Opfer. Diese Panter müssen oft essen, denn manche ihrer Jagdbeuten sind viel zu klein für sie. 

BLACK ANGEL verbreiten auf ihrem Album keinen Blödsinn, sie brennen förmlich und die leichten Verzerrungen in ihren Gitarren tun ihr Übriges. Die Riffs sägen sich in den Schädel. Ab und an ätzt sich ein Lead Break in einen Song und droht damit, alles aufzulösen. Die längeren Tracks haben meistens diesen ultralangsamen Doom Sound um damit erst recht dem Hörer das Genick zu brechen, was diese Band wirklich außerordentlich gut beherrscht, genauer gesagt, man kann dazu headbangen wie man möchte, nur um dann von den schnelleren Parts den Schädel abgetrennt zu bekommen. Obwohl ihr Sound recht gleichförmig ist, die Tempowechsel und die kreischenden Soli verhindern jegliche Langeweile. Der Bass unterstützt dies sehr gut, ein Eigenleben entwickelt er lediglich bei den langsameren Parts, da kann man ihn jedenfalls viel besser raushören. Der Gesang ist höllisch, richtiggehend dämonisch. Die Drums geben alles, vom ultralangsamen Spiel hin zum totalen Blasting. Für diese Art von Musik wurde auch alles ordentlich abgemischt und die Produktion sorgt für das entsprechende Feeling. 

Wer jetzt immer noch nicht überzeugt ist, möge bitte die Labelsite aufsuchen und sich den Kracher „Apocalyptic War II“ anhören. Nach 17 Jahren haben es BLACK ANGEL endlich geschafft ein Album richtig klingen zu lassen. War es die Wartezeit wert? Ihr könnt euer rechtes Ei drauf verwetten. (Online 12. December 2005)

En Sudamérica también tenemos Black Metal del bueno y los peruanos de BLACK ANGEL lo demuestran con su estilo “old school” en su nuevo disco “From The Darkness”.
Estos veteranos nacidos en Lima rememoran los viejos tiempos del metal negro con piezas que funcionan como un verdadero tributo a los grandes y remiten en varios pasajes a agrupaciones como Gorgoroth o los primeros Bathory.
EL disco fue grabado en Colombia y más allá de que en este estilo los “descuidos” en cuanto a sonido suelen ser intencionales, aquí no es tan dificultoso y todo puede apreciarse con cierta claridad.
Claramente la originalidad no es una característica pero sí lo es la actitud de la banda (¿se llama experiencia eso?) en un disco directo, simple, oscuro y muy bien tocado.
Demás está decir que si el metal más crudo y oscuro del planeta te pone la piel de gallina, BLACK ANGEL puede tener un lugar entre tus nuevas adquisiciones.

This band combines pure thrash metal riffs with a black metal voice creating tunes thata re full of aggression and darkness. There is a combination here of fast riffs with rhythms that could be used in a moshpit and also with fast balck metal runs and blast beats. The vocals are extremely black metal giving the more extreme feeling to the music. The guitars cosntruct also some melodies here and there that have an old school black metal feeling sort of in some old Bathory tune. And the guitars have a really raw sound that is not out of place in a primal band like this one. The sound is moody and maybe with a better mix in the guitars the result could be even more aggressive. A release with a lot of variations between compositions and moods.

Finally the first full length of this Peruvian Cult Black Metal band is released!! This band is attacking the underground under the name of Black Angel since 1992, but its mastermind and founder Mr. Hector Corpus is active with this entity (under different names) since 1988!! That makes Black Angel one of the oldest Black Metal bands, not only in South America but worldwide… Musically “From The Darkness” is a piece of Black Metal of the finest calibre. Slow to mid paced velocities predominate this work, remarkable are the slow section with sinister, obscure mid tuned (sometimes almost Doom Metal) riffs, just listen the first song “Rites”, and will have a good idea of what this album is all about. Of course there’re fast sections too, with effective blast beats drumming parts, mid tempo riffs and some lead, obscure, guitar lines here and there. The voices are infernal, grim, cut-throat, blackish shrieks which adds a sinister, hellish aura, especially in the slow sections. The incredibly dark atmosphere created in this album is varied but with hypnotic, cyclic parts that will make you fall under some kind of black spell. It’s improved by the songs duration, those are quite long, but never boring, there are a lot of structure’s changes during each song. The production of this album is excellent, with strong sound, you can distinguish, loud and clear each instrument. The style of Black Angel is quite unique and seems to have maintained their sound during all these years, but in this occasion they seem to have improved considerably the technical level in comparison with its previous works. Though it’s an Old School band, formed in the eighties; it doesn’t sound like typical Old School Metal with marked Thrash influences… it sound is Black Metal in its purest, darkest expression. BLACK ANGEL geistern schon seit 1988 durch den peruanischen, später durch den gesamten südamerikanischen Untergrund und haben es im August dieses Jahres geschafft, endlich ihr Debüt via Ketzer Rec. an den europäischen Mann zu bringen. Alle, die bei der Nennung des Labelnamens und oder der Herkunft der Band schon feuchte Schlüpfer bekommen können sich auch „From The Darkness“ bendenkenlos kaufen. BLACK ANGEL variieren das Tempo zwar nicht sonderlich geschickt, aber dennoch so häufig, dass es nicht eintönig wirkt. Sichtlich wohler fühlen sie sich dabei während der langsamen, schleifenden Passagen, denn da kommt die Bosheit und Kälte richtig zum tragen. Die schnellen Parts klingen auch wegen des sterilen Drumsounds recht eintönig. Als offenkundigster Einfluss ist wohl SAMAEL in deren Frühphase zu nennen, aber es gibt wohl keine Black Metal Band, die ohne DARKTHRONE, VENOM, SARCOFAGO und HELLHAMMER auskommt. Wenn sich die Band beim nächsten Album noch offener zu langsamen Passagen bekennt zück ich eine noch höhere Wertung.

BLACK ANGEL stammen aus Peru und machen... Na, was wohl? Klar: Black Metal! Angesichts des, auf diesem Sektor viel zu häufig anzutreffenden, ärgerlichen "Kraut und Rüben"-Gewurschtels kann man BLACK ANGEL systematisches und gezieltes Musizieren attestieren. Daß das Resultat letzten Endes dennoch ziemliches Gerumpel ist versteht sich von selbst, so daß BLACK ANGEL für Genrefreunde sehr interessant sind, den Normalhörer jedoch garantiert nicht erreichen werden.
